Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) borders India, China and Thailand. As a result, it possesses a rich martial arts heritage. As with the fabled Shaolin Temple of China, Buddhist monks from India introduced martial arts into Myanmar a thousand years ago.

Later, Chinese styles filtered their way south, merging with earlier influences to form the martial body of knowledge collectively known as Thaing. Thaing includes both unarmed arts, of which Bando is the most widely known, as well as arts of the sword, staff, and spear, Banshay. Other unarmed arts include Naban or Burmese wrestling and Lethwei or Burmese boxing.

Bando

'Art of Combat, Way of the Warrior'

Bando (Close full contact free hand system) is the ancient art of self defence from Myanmar. Bando includes the empty-hands methods and animal forms. Bando systems incorporate standup and ground tactics including kicking, striking, throwing, grappling, biting and weapons.

There are many styles of Bando, but most follow basic instructional patterns, easy to learn and hard to forget with 3 E’s in mind: Easy, Effective and Efficient. The art emphasizes initial withdrawal followed by an attack outside the opponent's reach. All parts of the body are employed in these attacks, and once the initial technique is delivered, grappling and locking techniques are used. Techniques are learned first through formal exercises and through sparring. Bando system encourage students to think creatively and learn to adopt in combat situations.

When the Japanese invaded Burma in 1942, they encouraged the practice and proliferation of Bando and influenced it by exchanging techniques from Judo, Jujutsu, Aikido and Karate.

Combat Bando is the system utilized by the most feared warriors in the world- the Gurkha soldiers. This system of combatics has been proven through time and history to be extremely effective in the battlefield and in jungle warfare. This system is now being offered to public safety professionals. Combat Bando is a specialized defensive and offensive tactics training that is specifically engineered for law enforcement, public safety, military special ops and special security forces.

Bando Philosophy "No system is completely unique. No system is completely independent from external and internal influences. Every system evolves over time by integration, modification and restructuring, resulting in what we then call "uniqueness." Overtime, this unique system will also change."

[His Holiness the Venerable Amarapura Sayadaw, 1910]
